Home health wasn’t always the plan for Shekinah’s future. When she realized becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant (CAN) meant being able to show up for her son in a new and impactful way, she took the leap and earned her certification. Since starting her career with us, Shekinah has found a rewarding new routine for her family, one that prioritizes her son’s comfort, safety, and quality of care. While her path may have been unexpected, it’s given her added peace of mind and a new support system. What makes working as a CNA at Care Options for Kids different?
"I became a CNA because I wanted to be the caregiver for my son. Becoming certified allowed me to combine my role as his mom with the skills to provide the best care I can. I can't compare it to other healthcare employers because this is my first CNA position, but I've always felt supported. Whenever I have questions, someone is available to help."
What does caring for patients at home mean to you?
"Home is where children feel safest and most comfortable. Being able to provide care in that environment allows them to stay surrounded by the people, routines, and things they love. As both a mom and a CNA, I know how meaningful it is to receive quality care without taking away the comfort of home."
How is home health different from a facility?
"I haven't worked in a facility, but I imagine one of the biggest differences is the opportunity to focus on one patient at a time. Home health allows you to give individualized attention and really get to know the patient and their family's routines, goals, and personality."
Can you share a moment where you made a difference?
"Becoming my son's CNA has allowed me to support him in more ways that I could have previously. Every milestone he reaches is meaningful to me. Knowing that I can help him receive the care he needs while also giving him the comfort of being with his mom has made an incredible difference for our family."
What do you love most about building one-on-one relationships?
"One-on-one relationships build trust and allow patients to feel comfortable. Over time, you learn what motivates them, what makes them laugh, and how to encourage them through challenges."
What advice would you give someone considering Care Options for Kids?
"If you enjoy building meaningful relationships and want the opportunity to make a real difference in someone's daily life, home health is incredibly rewarding. The small things you do each day can have a lasting impact on both your patient and their family."
Continuing her new chapter as a CNA
