Role, Caseload, and Clinical Expectations
1. What age groups will I primarily care for?
Care Options for Kids provides pediatric services to infants, children, and adolescents. The ages available on your caseload will depend on your discipline, location, current referrals, and clinical experience. Some therapy programs serve children from birth through school age, while other pediatric services may support patients through age 21.
2. What types of pediatric patients does Care Options for Kids serve?
COFK serves children with a wide range of medical, developmental, neurological, behavioral, communication, sensory, and mobility needs. Depending on the service line, clinicians may work with medically fragile or technology-dependent children, premature infants, children with developmental delays, children with autism or Down syndrome, and children with neurological, orthopedic, respiratory, feeding, or communication needs.
3. What clinical skills are required?
Requirements depend on the role and patient assignment. Pediatric nurses may provide G-tube, tracheostomy, ventilator, medication, respiratory, or seizure-related care when included in the child’s individualized care plan. Therapists must meet the licensing, certification, evaluation, treatment-planning, and documentation requirements for their discipline. Clinicians are only assigned to cases for which they have the required qualifications and validated competencies.
4. How many patients will I typically see per day or week?
The expected number varies by discipline, employment status, market, availability, and patient needs. Private duty nurses generally provide one-on-one care to one child for an extended shift. Home-based therapists typically see multiple children within a condensed geographic area. The expected visit volume or weekly productivity target should be reviewed with the recruiter for the specific position.
5. How much travel is required between patient homes?
Travel depends on the role. A private duty nurse is generally assigned to one patient home for an entire shift, which limits travel between patients. Home-based therapists travel between scheduled visits, but COFK works to develop caseloads within condensed geographic zones to reduce excessive drive time. Territory boundaries vary by market.
6. How are cases assigned?
COFK considers the child’s clinical needs, the clinician’s license, experience, validated skills, location, availability, scheduling preferences, and overall fit with the family. Clinicians should discuss any concerns about an assignment before accepting it. The goal is a safe, sustainable match that supports both the child and the clinician.
Scheduling and Flexibility
7. What scheduling options are available?
Depending on local needs, COFK may offer full-time, part-time, PRN, daytime, evening, overnight, weekend, school-hour, or extended-shift opportunities. Available schedules are based on current patients, authorized hours, referral volume, and the requirements of the posted position.
8. Can I build a consistent caseload with recurring families?
Yes. Continuity is an important part of pediatric home health. Nurses often work recurring shifts with the same child and family, while therapists typically develop an ongoing caseload of children seen on a regular treatment schedule. Caseload consistency depends on family availability, authorizations, patient status, and referral volume.
9. How much control will I have over my schedule and assignments?
COFK positions are designed to provide meaningful scheduling flexibility. Clinicians can discuss their availability, preferred hours, territory, patient population, and clinical comfort level with the scheduling or clinical team. Final schedules must also meet patient needs, authorized service hours, and care-plan requirements.
10. Are long shifts, overnight care, or private duty nursing available?
Yes. Many pediatric nursing opportunities involve one-on-one private duty nursing, including daytime, overnight, and extended shifts. Availability varies by patient and market. Therapy positions generally use scheduled visits rather than extended private duty shifts.
11. What are the expectations for on-call coverage, weekends, and holidays?
Requirements vary by position. Field clinicians should not assume that every role requires on-call, weekend, or holiday coverage. Any required rotation, minimum availability, or holiday expectation should be stated in the job posting or discussed before accepting the position.
